Who is it for?

Our behavior modification therapy sessions are for past, present, and future patients of Chicagoland Veterinary Behavior Consultants (CVBC) who have been, or will be, seen by CVBC for a veterinary behavior consultation. Our therapy sessions can also benefit pets who have been evaluated and our being treated by another behavior veterinarian. Behavior modification therapy sessions are very different than obedience training. They are part of a multimodal approach to treat pets who struggle with anxiety, fear, aggression, and compulsive behaviors.

Why are virtual sessions important?

Virtual therapy sessions are most ideal for veterinary behavior patients who are struggling with behavior problems that involve anxiety, fear, and aggression.  These types of problems shut off the thinking brain and make learning very difficult even for very intelligent dogs.  Behavior therapy needs to start at the dog’s learning level.  Therapy needs to start in a place devoid of fear and where there is very little distraction.  This is where we can begin to change the dog’s emotional state and teach alternative behaviors and better coping skills.  If you want to see big changes, we have to start with small ones first.

Therapy also includes teaching people to help their dogs cope in a scary world.  Human learners will do better learning in safe environments too.  You wouldn’t want your teenager’s first driving lesion on the Dan Ryan Expressway where traffic is fast and dangerous requiring split-second muscle memory decisions. Driving lessons first start in a classroom to learn the rules of road. The first time behind the wheel is going to be in a deserted parking lot. Lots of practice and guidance will be needed before hitting the Dan Ryan!  The concept is the same for behavior therapy.

When properly prepared and ready, veterinary behavior patients can benefit from in-home/in-person therapy sessions.  We will refer you to the training professionals at our sister organization, A Sound Beginning Chicago, which provides in-person consultations.

How does it work?

Once we receive your payment, we will contact you to schedule your virtual session(s).  We will provide you with a zoom link and time to join in with one of our certified behavior therapy trainers. Our therapy trainer will:

  • Be able to see you and your pet.
  • Have their own dog (or cat) nearby to demonstrate each of the exercises.
  • Have videos of real-life situations that show you the principles of behavior modification and how to apply it in the real world.
  • Be watching and coaching you with your pet, making sure you've got a clear understanding of each element of the training and are confident with what you've learned.

Key Benefits

  • Easy to use– If you can take a selfie, you can do this. All you need is a computer or tablet with a camera and microphone OR a smart phone.
  • Distance isn’t a factor – our experts in behavior are available no matter where you live.
  • We can get you scheduled quickly - normally within 1-2 days.
